SIMILIES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
Yesterday we looked at how to know that God is with you by considering the similes of the Holy Spirit in the old testament. Today we’ll be considering the similes of the Holy Spirit in the new testament.
Most wells contain water and water is a familiar Bible figure. In the Bible, water sometimes refer to the word of God and at other times it refers to the Spirit of God.
However, how do we distinguish between when the word of God is being referred to from when the Spirit of God is being referred to?
When the water is still, the word of God is meant; when the water is running, the Spirit is symbolized.
This running water is described as living water in the old testament passages. We can also see them being described in the new testament scriptures below.
The Word – (Read John 3:5)
The Spirit – (Read John 4:14)
Jesus Christ is not called the water of life rather He gives the water of life. This giving of the water of life denotes the Spirit.
“And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.”
Revelation 21:6 KJV
“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”
Revelation 22:17 KJV
“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 12:13 KJV
If you carefully study the journey of the Israelites in Numbers 21:9-17, you’ll see that they were healed by looking up at an uplifted bronzen serpent, they journeyed toward the sunrising, they got refreshment from the spring and there was a resultant song. The springing up of the well followed their salvation and so it is with us today.
Our savior died on the cross for us and when we surrender by looking up to Him as our Lord and savior, the Spirit in our hearts produces a joyful, worshipful service.
The Holy Spirit is the power of the new life for fellowship with God. This is why every believer in Christ has a capacity for understanding and enjoying heavenly things.
The Holy Spirit is the power of the new nature and bubbles up in living joy.
It is not a stagnant well, rather, it’s a fountain of water that springs up in believers in Christ, filling us with the very joy of God. No earthly satisfaction is to be compared with this.
“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
Romans 5:5 KJV
How do you then know that God is with you ?
When you’re going through trials that should shut you down, you’ll have peace because you look to Jesus Christ and you will be filled with joy. See our savior’s command…👇
“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]”
John 16:33 AMP
