How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. – Psalm 119 vs 9

sand, footsteps, footprints

“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”
Revelation 3:14‭-‬16 KJV

A Lukewarm Christian is one who sits in the church believing the gospel but yet never doing anything about it. Lukewarm Christians are not sold out to the will of God.
These are the kinds of Christians that Jesus Christ was describing in the three parables of Mathew 25.
Those who are lukewarm only think of how to make their lives comfortable in this present world/ moment.

Here’s the sobering thing about the three parables in Mathew 25, there’s no middle ground. You’re either completely sold out to doing the will of God or you’re not at all.

In the parable of the talents, the servant who was given one talent didn’t squander it, gamble with it or lose it but he was termed wicked, slothful and unprofitable.

“Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His Lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Matthew 25:24‭-‬30 KJV

Wickedness can either be by commission or omission.
You can be wicked by flagrantly disobeying the ten commandments or by not investing your life for the kingdom of God.

1. Lukewarm Christians rarely share their faith with their neighbors, coworkers or friends. They don’t witness at all.
“Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.”
Luke 12:8‭-‬9 KJV

2. Lukewarm Christians do not live by faith because their lives are structured, so they don’t have to.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:16‭-‬17 KJV

If you’re not in a place where you’re always in desperate need of the spirit of God daily then there’s no way you’re living the Christian life. Every true Christian is on a mission in which the Holy Spirit is a necessity for succeeding at it.

3. Lukewarm Christians give God their leftovers instead of their first and best.

“A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the Lord is contemptible. And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts.”
Malachi 1:6‭-‬8 KJV

4. Lukewarm Christians do not pray.

“For the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people. Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way…”
1 Samuel 12:22‭-‬23 KJV

“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint…”
Luke 18:1 KJV

5. Lukewarm Christians do not believe/ trust in the Lord.

“But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.”
Hebrews 3:17‭-‬19 KJV

“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me…”
John 16:8‭-‬9 KJV

6. Lukewarm Christians do not practice good deeds.

“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Matthew 25:41‭-‬46 KJV

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Galatians 6:9 KJV

7. Lukewarm Christians do not love the Lord.

“If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.”
1 Corinthians 16:22 KJV

8. Lukewarm Christians are not committed to God’s work.

“Cursed be he that doeth the work of the Lord deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.”

“And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.”
2 Corinthians 12:15 KJV

Many struggle with lukewarmness at certain seasons of life when they ought to press toward the mark for the prize of the higher calling of God in Christ Jesus.

We must reject it, wake up from our sleep, slumber no more and run the race that is set before us.

Let us pray

Father in the name of Jesus Christ, deliver me from every form of lukewarmness that hinders my testimony. Amen!
